Page 42   Wednesday August 16 th

 Ordered that Thomas Wilson , Constable be allowed the sum of seventy-five dollars for his services in summoning in the persons in his District to give in their list of assessment.

 Ordered that John Pope , Constable, be allowed the sum of seventy-five dollars for the above services in his District.

 Ordered that Isaac Acre , Constable, be allowed the sum of seventy-five dollars for the above services in his District.

 Ordered that Samuel Harper , Constable, be allowed the sum of seventy-five dollars for the above services in his District.

 Ordered that Francis Capps , Constable, be allowed the sum of seventy-five dollars for the above services in his District.

 Ordered that Thomas Jinkins , Constable, be allowed the sum of seventy-five dollars for the above services in his District.

 Ordered that James Egerton , Constable, be allowed the sum of seventy-five dollars for the above services in his District.

 Ordered that Arthur Smith  be Overseer of the road from Capt. Thomas Eaton 's Ferry to the end of the causeway, and that he keep the same in repair with the hands belonging to the said Eaton.

 William House  is appointed Overseer of the road beginning at or near Silas Jordan 's and running into the road near Col. Hawkins ' as the same is laid off according to a Jury's report and that he clear and open the same with the hands of Silas Jordan , Thomas York , James House , Jesse Jinkins , Joseph Pardue  and William Cunningham .

 Daniel Vaulx  is appointed Collector in Capt. Wrenn and Fussell's District .

 Bennett Wood  is appointed Collector on Twitty's  and Strudivant's District .

 Gideon Hunt Macon  is appointed Collector in Capt. Peter Cox ' District.

 Marmaduke Johnson  is appointed Collector in Capt. Christmas' District .

 Davis Nicholson  is appointed Collector in Capt. Daniel Sledge's District .

 John Wortham  is appointed Collector in his own and Capt. Harris' District .

 On the Petition of Wyatt Hawkins , Esquire, for leave to erect a Water Grist Mill on Smith's Creek , he having land on one side the said creek.  Ordered that Bennett Wood  Matthew Wood , Joshua Mabry , and John Power  be summoned to attend with the County surveyor to lay off and value one acre of land on each side of the creek opposite to where the Petitioner intends his said Mill to be erected, and report the same to the next Court under their hands and seals, and ordered that Thomas Paschall  proprietor of the land on the other side of the said creek, be summoned to appear at next Court to show cause.

 Ordered that the bridge formerly taken by James Johnson  on Fishing Creek  be let again by James Ransom , Hugh Hayes , and Thomas Green , the Court releasing the said James Johnson  from rebuilding the same, he having agreed to pay back the money he has received to the other undertaker who is to take it for five years from the completion of the same.

 John Hawkins , Esquire, is appointed Guardian to Charles Riggon  and Richard Riggon  orphans of William Powell  Riggon, deceased, who with Wyatt Hawkins , Esquire, his security, enters into and executes a bond for his faithful performance.

 George Norsworthy  is appointed Collector in Captain Colclough's District .

 Ordered that the hands of Thomas Person , Esquire, at Stone House work on the Reedy swamp road to Butterwood.

 John Wright  is appointed Constable in the room of Thomas Wilson  and ordered that he be sworn before some Justices of this County before he enters into the execution of his office.

 Ordered that William Johnson , Esquire, clear the land for the Courthouse, prison, and common, also the street adjoining the same, and to bring in his account to the Court for performance thereof.

 Then the Court adjourned until Court in Course.

 At a Court summoned and held for Warren County  at Warrenton the 20th day of September 1780, agreeable to the Act of Assembly --- an Act for laying a specific provision on all the Inhabitants of this State for the support of the Army and Navy of this and the Untied States in the Southern Department.

Present: William Johnson , Philemon Hawkins , John Hawkins , Thomas Turner , Phillip Burford , Young McLemore , Edward Jones , Daniel Sledge , and John Macon , Esquires.

 Agreeable to the said Act, the above Court have appointed William Christmas , Commissioner, for the above said County in receiving the specific provision mentioned in the said Act; who entered into and gave bond with William Green , Adkins McLemore  and John Macon  his security for his faithful performance of his said trust, took the oath appointed to be taken by the said Act.

 Tuesday morning the Court met according to adjournment.

 Present: Philemon Hawkins , James Paine , Daniel Sledge , and John Macon , Esquires.

 A Deed from Daniel Linch  to David Moore , was proved by the oath of Thomas Owen , a witness thereto, and on motion the same is ordered to be registered.

 A Deed from Joseph Darnal  attorney for Bailey Fleming  to John Bowdon , was proved by the oath of William Turner , a witness thereto, and on motion the same is ordered to be registered.

 A Deed from Lewis Ballard  to John Bowdon , was proved by the oath of Daniel Smith , a witness thereto, and on motion the same is ordered to be registered.

 William Hansill  acknowledged a Deed to Jonathan Wood , at whose motion the same is ordered to be registered.

A Deed from Mary Dent  to Jonathan Wood , was proved by the oath of William Hansill , a witness thereto, and on motion is ordered to be registered.

 A Deed from Len Henry Bullock  to Joseph Hawkins , was proved by the oath of Thomas Williams , a witness thereto, and on motion is ordered to be registered.

 The Last Will and Testament of James Balthrop , deceased, was presented  in Court and proved by the oath of John Todd , one of the witnesses thereto, and the same ordered to be recorded.

 Page 47   Tuesday   November 15 th

 A Deed from Robert Caller Jr . to William Wortham , was proved by the oath of Peter Twitty , a witness thereto, and on motion the same is ordered to be registered.

 Ordered that a road be opened.  Beginning at or near Col. Thomas Eaton 's new road where it falls into the Halifax road, and running the most convenient way so as to strike the Purchase Patent road, and ordered that the said road be opened by the hands belonging to William Hill , John Baxter , James Thompson , John Brown , Wilmot Egerton , James Egerton , James Harris , Charles Harris , and Edmond Harris , Joseph Harris , John Faulcon , Nathan Holliman , Daniel Sledge , Joseph Shearin , James Nicholson  Jr., Samuel Thompson  and that William Hill  be Overseer of the said road and that the same be opened according to law.

 A bond given by William Harrison  to the State, for building and keeping a bridge in repair over Fishing Creek  near Thomas Green , is returned by the persons appointed to let the same, and ordered to be recorded.

 Ordered that the Collector pay William Harrison  the sum of sixteen hundred pounds in part for building a bridge over Fishing Creek  near Thomas Green .

 Ordered the Collector pay William Harrison  a sum of twelve hundred and seventy pounds current money in full for building a bridge over Fishing Creek  neat Thomas Green .

 A Deed from James Merritt  to Joseph Hawkins , was proved by the oath of John Hawkins  Jr., a witness thereto, and on motion the same is ordered to be registered.

 A Deed from Mark Thornton  to Benjamin Ellis , was proved by the oath of Henry Strudivant , a witness thereto, and on motion is ordered to be registered.

 Thomas Miller  acknowledged a Deed to his son Thomas Miller  Jr., and on his motion is ordered to be registered.

 George Allen  acknowledged a Deed to Richard Riggon , and on motion the same is ordered to be registered.

 John Ellington  acknowledged a Deed to James Dozier  and on motion the same is ordered to be registered.

 The Grand Jury for the body of this County being sworn (to wit) Isaac Hunter , foreman, John Hawkins , Gideon Hunt Macon , Bennett Wood , William Clemmons , Jesse Hunter , Marmaduke Johnson , Samuel Paschall , James Emmerson , Matthew Davis , William Wilson , William Noyal Norsworthy , John Green , John Bobbitt  Jr., William Powell , Joseph Green , John Nicholson , and Charles Harris , received their charge withdrew from the bar.

 The Petition of Samuel Thompson  to rebuild a mill is referred until next Court.

 George Norsworthy  being appointed by the Court to collect the taxes in Capt. John Colclough 's District  entered into and executed bonds with Thomas Miller  and Thomas Miller  Jr. his securities for the faithful performance thereof.

 Daniel Vaulx  being appointed by the County to collect the taxes in Capt. Fussell's  and Nichol's District , entered into and executed bonds with Joseph Hawkins  and William Clemmons  his securities for the faithful performance thereof.

 Page 49   Tuesday   November 15 th

 Davis Nicholson  being appointed by the Court to collect the taxes in Capt. Daniel Sledge 's District entered into and executed bonds with James Nicholson  and John Nicholson , his securities, for the faithful performance thereof.

 Gideon Hunt Macon  being appointed by the Court to collect the taxes in Capt. Peter Cox ' District, entered into and executed bonds with Marmaduke Johnson  and John Hawkins  Jr., his securities, for the faithful performance thereof.

 Bennett Wood  being appointed by the Court to collect taxes in Hawkins' and Burford's District  entered into and executed bonds with Frederick Malone  and John Ellington , his securities, for the faithful performance thereof.

 Philemon Hawkins  Jr., made oath in open Court to his deposition relative to a caveat for land between John Hawkins  Jr., and Thomas Cannon  which was ordered to be certified.

 Then the Court adjourned until tomorrow 10'oclock.

 Wednesday morning the Court met according to adjournment.

Present: William Johnson , Philemon Hawkins , Phillip Burford , Daniel Sledge , and Joseph Hawkins , Esquires.

 A Deed from Thomas Young  to John Newell , was proved by the oath of William Newell , a witness thereto, and on motion the same is to be registered.

 Page 50   Wednesday November 16 th

 Marmaduke Johnson  being appointed by the Court to collect the taxes in Capt. William Christmas ' District, entered into and executed bonds with James Johnson  and Gideon Hunt Macon  his securities for the faithful performance thereof.

 Isaac Acre  Deputy Sheriff returned into Court an account of the sale of the Estate of William Powell  Jr., deceased, and the same was ordered to be recorded.

 A Deed from Randolph Hazilwood  and Ann , his wife, to Mary Duke , was proved by the oath of Nelson Cole , a witness thereto, and on motion the same is ordered to be registered.

 Susannah Powell , relict of William Powell  Jr., deceased, is appointed Guardian to William Wesley Powell , orphan of the said William, who with William Powell , her security, entered into and executed a bond for the faithful performance of her said trust.

 Seth Williams  came into Court and made choice of Nimrod Williams  his Guardian with James Basket  his security, entered into and executed a bond for his faithful performance of his said trust.

 John Weathers  being appointed by the Court to collect the taxes in Capt. Harris'  and Weathers' District  entered into executed a bonds with William Powell  and Josiah Green , his securities, for the faithful performance thereof.

Ordered that Delilah , a Mulatto girl, born of the body of Elizabeth Franklin , aged nine years the 22nd day of February last, be bound to Drury Jackson  until she attain to the age of eighteen years, her said master, to learn her to read, and the business of housewifery.
