Comparison of JPEG vs. GIF formats

The small photos that follow this text provide a link to images that were scanned from a 3-1/2 by 5 inch photograph at 75 dots per inch (dpi) resolution. The images that are displayed on this page were scanned at 38 dpi. To compare the length of time it takes to download each type of image, click on the image.

The following image was saved in millions of colors in JPEG format. Image size of the linked image is 26 Kb, and it takes about 14 seconds to download over a 14.4 modem. The file size of the image displayed on this page is 7 Kb.

The following image was saved in 256 colors in GIF format. Image size of the linked image is 98 Kb, and it takes about 50 seconds to download over a 14.4 modem. The image displayed on this page is 24 Kb.

If you actually downloaded the images, you may have noticed that the image in GIF format takes roughly 4 times as long to download as the image in JPEG format. For this reason, we recommend that scanned photographs be saved in JPEG format.

GIF format is best suited for line drawings and logos.

Another thing you may have noticed if you downloaded the images is that they would approximately fill the viewing area of a web browser or image viewer running in VGA mode, which is a very typical setup for many computers. That is why we recommend scanning photographs at 75 dpi if they are going to be used on the web.
