Adding a Hit Counter

To demonstrate the creation of hit counters, we will count hits to this help file which is called counter.html.

To add a hit counter to a page, do the following:

• Make another file, giving it the same filename as the primary file but with the extension of .count. For example: To count hits on this file, counter.html make a file called counter.count
• Put a number on the first row of the *.count file Put the following code in the *.html file <!--#exec cgi="/cgi-bin/c4.pl"-->
  (graphical representation)
• The name of the file you are counting hits to must end in .html

Each time the *.html file is retrieved, the server increments the contents of the *.count file by one, and displays the new results.

If you want to count hits without showing them to your visitors, make the font of the hit counter the same color as your background.

We can also instruct the server to send you a weekly hit report for every page and graphic.
