This Story was told to Iris Smith by her
Father James Edward Smith Jr
As a young man he helped his father James Edward Sr. in the freight business. Just a while before dad was to be married to Nellie Chynoweth. Grandpa sent him to Marysvale, Utah with a wagon load of freight to the railroad station. While there dad decided to buy him a new pair of shoes to be married in. He thought he needed a new pair of shoes as he only had one old pair of work shoes. When he returned home he told grandpa what he had done, he said, "Grandpa was very put out with him to think he was so extravagant."
My father said he told Grandpa, "Well, Pa, if I'm not
worth a pair of shoes, then I'm not worth much!" Dad said,
they exchanged a few cuss words, good Bible words, and soon after
that Dad and Mother were married and he went his way. Months
later Grandpa Smith died and my Dad always felt bad to think he
wasn't as close to Grandpa those last few months of his life.
