Photo Montage Techniques

featuring a Washington DC temple

The inspiration:
Washington DC Mormon Temple of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints
This photo contains the basic inspiration for the final artwork, but there are a number of problems, for example, the image of the building is overexposed and blurry, and two of the towers are encased in scaffolding. There are some artifacts in the photo that distract from the desired effect.

A partial solution:
The Washington temple during the day
A picture taken from the same spot during daylight hours supplies a source for a better picture of the building.

A building close-up:

The picture shows scaffolding, which is removed by pixel editing before pasting over the blurred image of the building at nighttime.

The completed montage:

After some cut and paste magic, and removal of some artifacts we arrive at another rendition which is a vast improvement over the original photographs. Can it be improved further?

Another perspective:

Another photo is found which provides the raw material for another composition.

About the building:

The building is a temple built by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, the Mormon Church, in 1968-1974. It is located near exit 33 on the Capital Beltway, I-495, in Kensington Maryland, a suburb northwest of Washington, DC.

This exit on to Connecticut Avenue goes into Kensington, and if people go north on Connecticut Avenue to Beach Drive then east (right) to Stoneybrook Drive, they can then turn left up the hill about 1/4 mile to the entrances to the Temple and the Visitor's Center. The Visitors' Center is open Daily, 365 days a year from 10:00 AM to 9:00 PM.

The highest spire is 288 feet above ground, but the building sits on top of a hill so it appears considerably taller. It is an urban legend that the building is irreverently called Oz by motorists on the beltway.
