History
The land that is now
West Bountiful was once a damp, swampy place. Mill Creek ran through it and
there was only one narrow trail leading in to it. In 1848, after asking Indians
in the area where the best farm land was, James Fackrell Senior and his family
settled in the area.
The second person to
settle land was William S. Muir, who came in the fall of 1849. These men and
subsequent settlers of the area paid $1 per acre for their land.
Charles Pearson taught
the first organized school in a room which was added on to Daniel Wood's home.
Daniel Wood was another early settler of West Bountiful. About 30 children
attended. Then, in 1851, the first school house was built - an adobe school
house. And in 1877 the first church was built by William S. Muir, Jr. All the
people in West Bountiful helped raise funds to build these places. Mr. Muir was
one of the fist carpenters of West Bountiful. He and John Stanford built many
carriage houses which are still standing today.
In 1948, West
Bountiful incorporated as a separate city from Bountiful.
