Thatcher
Box Elder County
Utah
The agricultural community of Thatcher, Utah was named for the Honorable Moses Thatcher of Logan, who was an LDS apostle from 1879 to 1896. The town was first settled in the early 1890's.
James Nelson was called as Presiding Elder of the LDS Branch that was formed on 15 February 1902. On 28 September 1902, the Branch was made a Ward, and President Nelson became the first Bishop. As the community grew, the Promontory and Penrose Branches became dependent upon the Thatcher Ward.
For many years, the Thatcher School was the only school in that part of the valley, and many children had to travel long distances to attend there.
Melissa Bejot has kindly contributed this photo of the 6th, 7th and 8th grades at the Thatcher school around 1936. If you know who any of these people are, please let us know. We'd love any other photo contributions you might have.
