| *According to History of Box Elder County, published by Daughters of Utah Pioneers in 1937, "Philip Ettlemen, great grandfather of the Mary Valentine family, was the first man buried in the Brigham City Cemetery. He is resting on a lot to the extreme southern end and about two blocks west of Main Street, as the cemetery is now platted. Mr. Ettleman had been hauling a load of timber and on the return trip was driving up Third North near Third East where the old tannery was located. He was sitting on the front of the running gears when suddenly the reach-pole broke loose from the hind gear. The motion of the wagon caused the pole to fly forward and hit the team on the back, at the same time pinning Mr. Ettleman in such a way that he was dragged to death by the runaway team. The accident occurred November 16, 1854." | |
Burial records are not available at this website yet. Gwen is willing to do look-ups for this cemetery. You can contact her at gcumins@yahoo.com. You can also contact the Brigham City Cemetery offices directly.
There's a nice history of the Brigham City Cemetery at Alice Hamilton's website for her Williams ancestors. Go to http://users.ev1.net/~hmltn/williams/williams.htm and click on the link for "Brigham City Cemetery" on the left column.
