A Brief History of
Fielding Cemetery

Fielding, Box Elder County, Utah

Thanks to Jerry Richards, who submitted the following brief history of the Fielding Cemetery

At a special meeting on March 29th 1891 the current cemetery property, which contains about six acres was donated by Ebon O Wilcox.  Samuel R Capener was chosen as sexton.  Mr. Capener was to have the Property surveyed and fenced, which he did.

The cemetery was surveyed in six blocks of forty-four lots in each block with eight graves in a lot. The lots were sold on a first come bases and each family was to take care of their lot.

The first burial at the new cemetery was on September first 1898. He was Harold Capener, the son of Samuel Capener, who was the Sexton. There is an earlier death date recorded in the cemetery records, of a Charles Dalton who died in August of 1888. He was buried at another location and later moved to the new cemetery.

In July of 1950, voters in the area voted to establish a cemetery district so that monies could be raised to take care of the cemetery. During the summer of 1950 local residents turned out with their machinery to clear brush, grade roads, and plant grass. John Owen, who at that time was Mayor of Fielding, headed this project.

The Town of Fielding owned the Fielding Cemetery until around 1985. At that time the Cemetery was deeded over to the Cemetery District.

Part of this information was taken from the book Fielding written by Mr. Gale Welling.
