THE WAR DIARY 

Intensity of the Indian Raids in the West continues, resulting in death, property destruction and disruption of train and stagecoach communication.  Latest depredations have occurred near the Little Blue River, Salina, and Milesburgh, all in the area of Ft. Riley, Kansas.  Sent West to bolster army forces is the 1st U.S. Volunteers, a 1,000 man regiment of captured Confederates-and deserters-who have taken the oath of allegiance to the U.S.

  The U.S. District Court here has found Dr. Brown of Liberty, Me., guilty of applying poison to drafted men in such a that they were exempted from service for piles and other diseases.  He had charged the men $100 each...

Vevay, Ind. 
   The steamer Highly Chief sank Friday near here after a collision with the steamer Major Anderson.  Several persons were injured.
