The Casualties at Atlanta
Prominent among the casualties in the two main battles around Atlanta this
week:
Union: Killed, Gen. J. B. McPherson on Friday (he was 35), Col. G.
A. Cobham (Wednesday); wounded, Gen. W. Q. Gresham (on Friday) and Col. S. J.
McGroarty (Wednesday).
Confederate: Killed, Gen. W. H. T. Walker of Georgia, on Friday (he
was 47); wounded, Gens. C. H. Stevens (Wednesday), J. A. Smith and H. W. Mercer
(on Friday) and Col. Samuel Benton (on Friday).
Best available reports show that in the Battle of Peachtree Creek, there were
20,139 federals engaged of whom about 200 were killed and 1,400 wounded. Of the
18,832 Confederates engaged, 1,113 are believed to be killed, abut 2500 wounded
and several hundred missing.
In Friday's battle, federal losses reportedly totaled about 500 killed, 2100
wounded and 1,000 missing in action. Confederate losses reportedly were
2500 killed, about 4,000 wounded and about 2,000 missing in action.
