Photo was copied from the Sun Advocate Newspaper April 16, 2002 - This is a photo from about 1912 of the kids in the Winter Quarters School, seventh and eighth grades. In the photo is Julius Spigarelli, Edward Mickeljohn, Charles Cormacchaeli, Jack Kell, Robert Jordrson, Daniel Hvala, Louis Olsen, Helen Gibson, Nellie Richards, Lucile Boroter, Elen Budvarson, Louise Gibson, George Wallace, John Bradwell and Alfred Quilter. The man in the photo is D.D. Woodward who later became the superintendent of Carbon School District. Woodward, who was born in Fountain Green, came from a long line of teachers. He advanced quickly once he joined the Carbon District and went from principal to superintendent in a short period of time. He died suddenly at the young age of 42 on March 8, 1929. He was the superintendent when the Scofield School was built. His name is on the plaque that is still attached to the building that stands in Pleasant Valley. |

It is believed that the following photograph was taken in Winter Quarters between 1912 to 1920. It has been donated by Mary Mamalakis. Mary Mamalakis came into possession of the picture from Stella Pantelakis Mamalakis, who was born in Manifall, Pennsylvania in 1911 to Calliope Kavoulakis and George Pantelakis from Vamos, Crete. The family came to Carbon County by 1912 where two more sons were born, Steve in 1913 and William in 1916. The following names appeared on the back of the photograph. |
