This is an index of the histories that have been collected of Carbon County residents. If there is a notation "online history" it is included on this webpage. Just click on it and you can read it here. Many of the the histories will take you to other webpages on the internet. Please be sure to come back.
* The histories marked with "Oral History" are available from the Charles Redd Center for Western Studies. The Charles Redd Center for Western Studies is an endowed organization established at Brigham Young University in January 1972. Its purpose is to promote the study of all aspects of the American West experience, with special emphases on the people who built the west.
In 1976 they visited Carbon County and conducted oral histories of some of the former residents of Castle Gate. These oral histories were transcribed and proofread by the individuals. Copies of these oral histories are available through Special Collections, Harold B. Lee Library, Brigham Young University, 801-378-2932.
Frances Cunningham has spent many years of her life indexing Carbon County newspapers, cemeteries, stories, and books. Special thanks needs to be given to her for all the time and work she has devoted to preserving the history of Carbon County in her lifetime. She has given me permission to add her indexes to the webpage thus making the information available to those who are searching for it. This will be a work in process. In the second column "History" is a notation of where historical information can be found about each individual and a brief description is included in the next column. If you need any help in obtaining this information please e-mail Kathy Hamaker.
If the notation in the second column is a newspaper article you may be interested in visiting University of Utah J. Willard Marriott Library. The library is in the process of putting some of the smaller towns, "old newspapers" online. Included, so far, is the Carbon County News 1908 - 1915; Eastern Utah Telegraph 1891-1892 and 1897-1915 and The News Advocate 1915-1923 and 1925-1932. This is an excellent and very valuable project.
